REPTILE REHOMING
Macarthur Herpetological Society assists with the rehoming of reptiles
where the licenced owner is no longer able to care for, or no longer wants, their animal.
We also assist wildlife rehabilitation organizations to rehome reptiles that are unable to be released.
We work in conjunction with NPWS Wildlife Licensing during this process, where necessary, to ensure all animals are being rehomed according to legal requirements. Our role in rehoming is to facilitate the process of locating a new home for these reptiles.
This involves contacting our members via email to get expressions of interest for potential new owners.
The interested parties names are placed into a ballot process to determine who will receive the reptile in the fairest way possible.
Once a ballot has been conducted for a licenced reptile, the new owner is contacted and given the contact details of the original owner.
For reptiles coming through a rehab group, this information is passed onto Wildlife Licensing.
This is to determine that the proposed owner is the holder of a current reptile license of an appropriate level
for the particular reptile being rehomed.
Once the licensing checks have been completed successfully, Wildlife Licensing will issue a Direction to Hold for that particular reptile. We ensure that both the new owner and current wildlife carer receive this Direction to Hold for their records.
We also pass along the necessary contact details to enable the new owner to arrange collection of the reptile directly from the wildlife carer. In the event that the licensing checks are not passed, the reptile will be re-balloted with the remaining interested parties until a suitable owner, who passes the licensing checks, can be found.
If we cannot rehome a reptile through our own society, we will reach out to other reptile societies members.
At the moment our current requirements for the rehoming process is as follows:
1. A current reptile licence that is the appropriate class for the reptile being applied for
2. A membership to ANY reptile society within NSW
In terms of reptiles for rehoming, we see an unpredictable variety of species including snakes, lizards and turtles.
Typically we see a majority of class one reptiles but do sometimes get class two reptiles for rehoming.
We do not receive class 3 or higher as these are rehomed via Wildlife Licensing directly to the class holders of the license required.
We only rehome native Australian reptiles as per the laws within our country and we do not rehome reptiles to/from interstate. Please reach out to your local organisations for this if you live outside of NSW as unfortuantely we will be unable to assist in these matters.
If you are specifically after a frog, please contact the Frog and Tadpole Study Group of NSW (FATS) directly as they are exclusively in charge of rehoming Frogs within NSW. Further information and contact details can be found via their website: https://www.fats.org.au/
Please contact Macarthur Herpetological Society via our contact form or email president@macarthurreptiles.com.au if you have any further questions.
